Quickly looking into Linux's code - such message is issued when 
pass-thru ATA IDENTITY command failed. It sounds there is "ATA discs 
behind Areca" support only. The following message seems to confirm it:

>    Smartctl: Device Read Identity Failed (not an ATA/ATAPI device)

You have SAS disks, isn't it ?
