It means that the device firmware is predicting device failure within the next 24 hours. This is not always reliable, but it IS a serious warning. (1) Get any unreplaceable data off the disk (2) Replace the disk. If still under warrranty, the manufacturer will give you a new one if you tell them that the SMART status is 'failing'.
