Hi all,

My HDD doesn't appear in the smartmontools database, and according to http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/, I should do this:

[stephen@slartibartifast ~]$ sudo smartctl -t short /dev/sda1
Password:
smartctl version 5.36 [i686-redhat-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-6 Bruce Allen
Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/

Short Background Self Test has begun
Use smartctl -X to abort test

And then email this list the output of this:

[stephen@slartibartifast ~]$ sudo smartctl -a /dev/sda1
smartctl version 5.36 [i686-redhat-linux-gnu] Copyright (C) 2002-6 Bruce Allen
Home page is http://smartmontools.sourceforge.net/

Device: ATA      Hitachi HTS72108 Version: MC4O

In Linux, SATA disks accessed via libata are only supported by smartmontools
for kernel versions 2.6.15 and above. Try an additional '-d ata' argument.
(Incidentally, I'm running 2.6.16)
