As far as i can tell, small potato doesn't do check extensions. You will get an improvement in tactical strength if you add this. The idea is: one extra ply for every check in the current search line. Will give more hints if you need them.
BTW congrats on NC3 last year. (That was the same small potato?) My impression is that small potato doesn't do anything special, but it appears to be well balanced and mostly bug free. These are important things competitively.

I've got quite a few ideas, but mainly no time. Check Extensions are in the pipeline, like king safety and pawn structure evaluation.
The main point of the program was for it to do some kind of learning, most likely some kind of temporal difference ala knightcap. I'll get back to that at some point

Here's some suggested changes, starting from version 0.7.0 . There's check extension and a couple of other improvements to the search. / GJ / comments hopefully near all the actual changes. I'm guessing maybe 100 Elo better, but hard to measure.
