Hi, My deepest apologies for stepping away from the slrn-doc project. I have a little too much going on at the moment and this will not alter over the next year or so. I am _very_ keen to keep developing the slrn web site and this will continue but I cannot commit to slrn-doc any more. Still I am glad that I made a contribution towards the 0.9.9 documentation :-). Hi, Something a bit odd about the file branches/0.9.9/FIRST_STEPS.html, svn downloads an empty file with score.html written in it. Is this just me? Andrew -- http://www.andrews-corner.org |

Hi, I have altered the 'todo' list for the 0.9.9 release docs in branch/ as I am sure the needs of this section are a little different to the trunk/ section. PJR please have a look at some stage and see if some additions / corrections need to be made? Andrew -- http://www.andrews-corner.org |

I've released the current html and txt documentation here: <https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=4526>. I've updated <http://slrn-doc.sourceforge.net/> accordingly, and posted a link in NSR. I've also added branches/0.9.9/ to the svn repository. Bugfixes to the 0.9.9 documentation should be made in this branch. trunk is now available for experimentation. Thanks, everyone! -- PJR :-) |

The slrn web site was created from a template donated by a very obliging gentleman: http://www.andrews-corner.org/template_2.html There is also a single column template on the same site that I am sure this gentleman would be happy to donate as well: http://www.andrews-corner.org/template_1.html that could easily be tailored for the slrn-doc site and slightly modified to fit the css on slrn.sourceforge.net. I'll be watching the bug tracker: <https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_id=4526> As soon as 0.9.9 is released, I'll make a documentation release, which I'll probably call 0.9.9.0, unless anybody has better ideas. The content of the files will at first be identical to the files included with slrn. I'll also create a "0.9.9" branch in the slrn-doc subversion tree. This will be for essential updates, not for experimentation. Also on my TODO list is an update for http://slrn-doc.sourceforge.net/ to make it look like the slrn site. We're official enough for the similarity to be appropriate. In conclusion, thanks to everybody, especially Andrew, for your work during a time when I haven't done much. I browsed through the HTML docs today, and I was impressed. slrn has always had better documentation than any other newsreader, and I think the documentation for 0.9.9 is going to be even better than the documentation for 0.9.8.1+. At this rate, the documentation for slrn 1.0 is probably going to be absolutely wonderful. -- PJR :-) |

Hi, Looks like I have managed to sneak in the updated slrn-doc.html file before the release of slrn 0.9.9 and it _will_ be in the 'official' slrn tarball. This should be great news for slrn-doc as the revised file has a solid set of links to the slrn-doc project. So for the minority of users who actually read the documentation there is now a clear pointer to slrn-doc :-). Andrew -- http://www.andrews-corner.org |

Hi, Just to let you all know that courtesy of a small neck injury and time off work I have achieved my goal of restructuring the directories and documents on the slrn website. For slrn-doc this will simply mean that any references to the slrn site will need to be either to: http://slrn.sourceforge.net/documentation.html which would be the safest option or to a file in: http://slrn.sourceforge.net/docs/blah_blah.html as the old scheme of some files in manual/ and some in docs/ has been abolished. This has all been scrupulously covered with 301 redirects so the general public will not be alarmed :-). Andrew -- http://www.andrews-corner.org |

So do I. Much the same could be done with the slrn documentation: e.g., FIRST_STEPS could be integrated at the beginning of the reference manual, and score.txt at the end. > Since this option is obviously for > the long term it raises the question again about which format should > be used? I haven't tried the other output formats, but I'm willing to bet they're ugly too. Here are two documents for slrn newbies: 1. <http://andrews-corner.org/slrn.html> 2. <http://slrn.org/docs/FIRST_STEPS.html> I want to be able to generate documentation that looks like 1, not 2. The fact that Linuxdoc is easy to learn is no reason to continue with it. Our job is to make life easy for users, not for ourselves. </rant> I suggest DocBook XML for new documentation and for eventual conversion of old documentation: <http://www.docbook.org/>. Anything that isn't Linuxdoc will do, as long as it's reasonably well documented, reasonably full of useful features, and capable of generating professional-looking output files. Any other ideas? Of course, we're limited to some extent by what JED is willing to include with slrn, but not everything we produce has to be official; we can release supplementary "slrn-doc" packages too. -- PJR :-) |

I agree completely with Option 2. Since this option is obviously for the long term it raises the question again about which format should be used? If linuxdoc sgml is used for such a large rewrite it will perhaps create unnecessary work in the near future when conversion to a different format would be undertaken. Hi folks, I was reading the slrnpull documentation to prepare for the update to 0.9.9, and have a fundamental question on moving forward. I'm cc'ing John because he may have a strong opinion on how we proceed, and would like his buy-in. Right now, the docs have little commonality with the slrn docs (SETUP + README vs README + FIRST_STEPS + INSTALL + manual.txt). Here are my choices: Option 1 - I organize slrnpull docs to conform to the slrn docs - get rid of SETUP and spread between README.* and INSTALL.* Option 2 - get rid of everything and create a single HOWTO type document, which can sit in the main slrn doc directory. A preliminary TOC off the top of my head will be: 1. Introduction 1.1. Other sources of information 1.2. New versions of this document 1.3. Feedback and Corrections 2. Compiling and Installing slrnpull 3. Configuring slrnpull 3.1. single-user Configuration 3.2. multi-user config 3.3 multiple upstream servers 4. Running slrnpull 4.1 anatomy of the slrnpull.conf file 4.2 authentication 4.3 maintenance (adding/removing groups, expiring, etc) 4.4 scoring 4.5 cron stuff 5. configuring and running slrn 5.1 true offline (maybe this is better in 4.x) A. Appendix A.1 true offline - how it works A.2 what's an active file and why do I need it A.3 running without a spool occasionally I prefer Option 2, but what does everyone else think. /rudy |

Hi, I have utilised a spare 2 hours and converted the file doc/slrnpull/README to slrnpull_README.sgml and placed it in the svn repository + generated html and txt. The sgml is a little rough still and could do with a little polishing but my spare hours have ended :-). Andrew -- http://www.andrews-corner.org |

A link to the slrn-doc website will lead to a link to the slrn-doc mailing list after a couple more clicks. I don't think it's necessary to do any more unless this list starts to include material of general interest to slrn users. At present I don't foresee the list doing much more than facilitating communication between slrn-doc developers. > BTW good on you PJR for starting and steering this project forward! Hi, I would like to add the new slrn-doc mailing list to the slrn website. Mailing lists are currently mentioned in 2 locations: http://slrn.sourceforge.net/index.html http://slrn.sourceforge.net/links.html#mailing So I would like to add slrn-doc here as well. But I am not sure of the wording which I guess would be something of a 'mission and vision' statement for the list / project. BTW good on you PJR for starting and steering this project forward!
