Rich,
The error is likely from the permissions on the autopsy.log file in
the Evidence Locker. You will need write permissions on that file so
that it can be updated when autopsy is started and cases are opened.
The first issue of the Sleuth Kit Informer has an article on the
required permissions for Autopsy.
