slightly off topic but does anyone know of a utility
that will mount a dd image under windows xp.

Try Cygwin. it supports Sleuthkit too.

VMWare's Back. I've successfully used this tool with *vmware* images,
and it claims to now support DD images. I have *not* tried it yet. But
it's a handy tool for VMWare images, if nothing else.
