We went ahead and built the new visualization, and would like some ​more
feedback. Attached are screen shots of both with real data. Rendering time
is very similar for each, but somewhat dependent on the data.

The questions are basically the same as before:  Which is easier to
understand? Which is more useful?  Should we keep both or only provide one?
