Well, you ran fsck on the file system, which fixed what ever problems 
were causing it to not mount before.  So, that would cause the MD5 to 
change.  I find it very strange that you could run 'mke2fs' on the disk 
device and not a partition device and it would find the file system 
that was originally inside of a partition....
