Version 3.4.0 of AFFLIB (about to be released) offers transparent support for DMG and VMDK image formats using the QEMU layer. 

Attached is a set of context diffs which adapt SleuthKit to support DMG and VMDK through AFFLIB. You are welcome to incorporate them.
