Linux.com has something called a Linux Index, which is
really just a topical way of navigating the site.
What is in there is a list of sections, and below that,
we want the most posted-to topics (limit 5 or so) in
each section to automatically show up. That way if a
topic gets stale, it doesn't remain in the index.
Whatever is in the index is going to have some fresh
content in it so it's pertinent.
Basically a topical way of navigating the site for
fresh content.

Conceptually the same thiing is intended to replace the 'Sections' list on
the left hand side of Slashdot, however given the somewhat surprising
deadlines that recently popped up, we might both be living with a static
list of topics for a few days/weeks.
Actually I think that what I want for Slashdot is more complicated than
what you want... you want to display say, a half dozen top level
categories, as well as the 3-5 most recently posted to topics underneath
them. This is pretty simple really. For Slashdot I want less dependance
on that top level list... if a really low level category in the hierarchy gets
large traffic, it should pop up into that list (for example, the BSD section/
nexus gets low traffic... if we have 7 caldera stories in the last week, I
think it makes more sense to include caldera in that list instead of BSD).
But to get 3 brand new templates up by friday, and a new core code for
Slashdot, I think we will wait a bit, so I'm just leaving these notes for he
who follows...

I don't understand this, and will need more info before I can do it. If it is
needed for next week's Lc going live ...

I believe Jamie has already been working on it and it's
nearly done.
