Just for anyone else who tries this, here is how I got the init sript running.
I moved the default slash init script to /usr/local/bin/slash. And removed
the shell override on the "su" statement since Gentoo su doesn't permit that
This is the init script that I used. It seems to work fine. I don't think
that it is really 100% correct to "start" the daemon to stop it, but it works
for me. Things start up in the right sequence on bootup and shut down cleanly
use mysql mta
ebegin "Starting slash"
start-stop-daemon --start --quiet --exec /usr/local/bin/slash start
ebegin "Stopping slash"
start-stop-daemon --start --quiet --exec /usr/local/bin/slash stop
