2 FAQs but never really answered are around hooking up a ad server and
using ssi w/ slash.
I have put in a hairy week, but I can now report success w/ both. Give me a
couple of days to write it up and I will share. I will wait a bit for any
comments, then incorporate them and post them to the slashcode web site.
Thanks to Allessio who helped me in private, finally putting me on what
turned out to be the right path.
The ad server is called DAD, found at http://www.sklar.com. Its useful features
are that it is mysql based, and runs as a mod_perl module. It appears to be
unsupported at this point (no response to an email I sent), but it is
nowhere near as complex as slash. It installs pretty easily except for
- one of the field names in the db has since become a keyword in mysql.
Change all instances of "when" to "xwhen" in the schema file and any source
code that references that field
- there are some drop down boxes in a form where you set the dates for ads
to run - you need to update the values because they only go until 2000.
Grep for 2000 and put in a new value for the years that suits your needs.
Also involved in the story are Apache::OutputChain, Apache::SSIChain, and
I hope my pending report will save people from either a hair-pulling
experience, deciding on a lesser solution, or giving up getting a
semi-decent ad-server hooked up to their site.
