I am installing a new Slash site at http://www.accordo.it/index.pl using
the 2.2.5 release and the Italian theme.
Everything seems to work fine, except for two flaws:
1) index.shtml, topics.shtml and authors.shtml are not updated. But
section1/index.shtml, mysite.rss, section1.rss etc. are all updated
fine. Permissions look ok.
2) I've subscribed to both the daily headlines and the daily newsletter,
and this morning I've received 3000+ messages!
Is it possible that these problems are time-related? I haven't (yet?)
fixed the servers to run on GMT time.

That's not a bad guess. slashd gets very cranky if its clock is not
in the correct timezone. We usually see this problem when people
fail to start it with /etc/(rc.d/)init.d/slash but it sounds like
you're doing that.
Anyway, check /usr/local/slash/site/yoursitename/logs/slashd.log and
see if it seems to executing tasks correctly (freshenup.pl should
run every three minutes, sounds like it might not be running at all)
and if it's complaining about anything.

That's odd, freshenup.pl updates the main index.shtml file at the
same time it updates section1/index.shtml. Permissions may be OK,
is the ownership also OK? Make sure the non-updated files are owned
by the middle field in /usr/local/slash/slash.sites.
