Sorry for such a simple question but what generates the index.shtml file, and how often does it do it / what kicks off an update? I was trying to use it in order to reduce pressure on the server by using index.pl every page however my index.shtml hasn't been updated recently.... -rw-rw-r-- 1 nobody nobody 64083 Jan 13 10:52 index.shtml -rw-rw-r-- 1 nobody nobody 86492 Jan 16 08:51 cheesyportal.shtml -rw-rw-r-- 1 nobody nobody 8839 Jan 16 08:56 hof.shtml -rw-rw-r-- 1 nobody nobody 5633 Jan 16 08:56 topics.shtml -rw-rw-r-- 1 nobody nobody 4244 Jan 16 08:56 authors.shtml Any ideas? I've looked through the logs and can't see anything obvious. Alex Available for java/perl/C++/web development in London, UK or nearby. I believe the SLASHD deamon generates it. It's like freshenup.pl in the tasks folder or something. The default I believe is every 5 minutes. I believe the VAR updatemin is what you need to look at. It's created by the task 'freshenup.pl'. Which is run by the slashd daemon, like Eric said. To see how often it runs, view the perl script. It's near the top of the script where it sets how often it's run. Also, see this: <URL: http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=521026&group_id=4421&atid=104421 > for an explanation of how freshenup.pl will, in some cases, not routinely update index.shtml. If you haven't updated/posted a story for some time, your index.shtml probably won't be re-made, even if your slashboxes have changed. |

More information on this problem folks which hasn't gone away. Basically the freshenup.pl script gets hung up because it tries to call article.pl in order to recreate some cache files and article.pl gets stuck. Here is my current stuck process )( ps -lww 23155 where the number is my process id) F S UID PID PPID C PRI NI ADDR SZ WCHAN TTY TIME CMD 000 S 99 23155 21002 0 69 0 - 3453 pipe_w ? 0:00 /usr/local/bin/perl -w /usr/local/slash/site/DiverseBooks/htdocs/article.pl virtual_user=going2 ssi=yes sid=03/01/20/1948220 section=bookspublished This tells me that article.pl is stuck writing something to a pipe. Anyone got any ideas on how to debug this further? article.pl usually works fine, so I don't know what is causing this problem. Incidently i *think* it is consistently having problems with "bookspublished" section. You should raise the debug level of slashd (a setting in vars). Restart slashd. Then watch carefully slashd.log. I suspect you will find some template errors popping up - at least it happened to me. -- Alessio Bragadini <al...@al...> APL Financial Services (Overseas) Ltd |

Restart >slashd. Unfortunately this hasn't told me anything I don't already know. freshenup.pl is calling article.pl, which is then freezing - however I can't insert slashdLog calls in to article.pl since those methods are defined in "runtask" slashd.log Thu Jan 23 16:01:00 2003 freshenup.pl begin Thu Jan 23 16:01:00 2003 Updating 03/01/23/1559227 > ps -lafeww | grep slash 00 S nobody 21614 25873 0 69 0 - 3781 pipe_w 16:01 pts/3 00:00:01 /usr/local/bin/perl -w /usr/local/slash/site/DiverseBooks/htdocs/article.pl virtual_user=going2 ssi=yes sid=03/01/23/1559227 section=reviews Hmmmmm I guess I need to put more debugging in article.pl :-( PS I'm using 2.2.6 I think.....
