The biggest feature 2.2 brings over 2.0 is the integration of AJP to the base, which I can appreciate as an occasional Java hacker. Personally, I would _love_ to see slash run on Apache 2.x. It would save me having to set up a second Apache installation just for slash. With a single Apache, my primary box could handle the load I expect (thanks to using worker rather than prefork). With two, I probably need to offload the 1.3 server to a different machine. (I know, I know, get a bigger box, but that just isn't in the cards right now.) So at least for me, the resource/performance angle of moving to 2.x would really help. Tim --=20 Tim Larson West Corporation, Interactive TeleServices Eschew obfuscation! |

Slash requires Apache 1.3.x. See the "REQUIREMENTS" section of the INSTALL file for all the details. <http://slashcode.cvs.sourceforge.net/slashcode/slash/INSTALL?view=3Dmarkup= > I just updated that file to switch our MySQL recommendation from 4.1.x to 5.0.x, by the way, but either is fine. Don't downgrade to 4.0.x, but if you are still running 4.0.x, that works fine too (for probably many months to come). I've been hearing better buzz about Apache 2.2 than 2.0, so we will probably evaluate the possibility of porting Slash to run on it, maybe late this year. That's not a promise. The main advantage of Apache 2.x is still that it runs more efficiently on Windows, and we don't care about that at all. --=20 Jamie McCarthy http://mccarthy.vg/ ja...@mc... |

Hi, Ive just installed slashcode on my server (gentoo linux) but although the site loads and works I have a few problems. 1. Email will not send, I think this is server related so not urgent 2. The vars do not seem to want to update at all - they update in the database but the actual httpd configs don't update and the siteinfo page shows the original vars not the new ones - this is the main problem. Any suggestions ? Thanks Stephen h |

Even started messing with it a few times. It never amounted to much (lack of time, interest, etc...) We've used fck with a number of projects (perl/asp) but none were slash-related. But the fck editor works quite well, and it's free as in beer :) I would do it as a plugin. I'd wrap it w/ javascript or something (and/or a user pref) so that it could be used in text areas with submissions, comment posts and even the story admin - though on the story admin you'd need 2 instances of fck (one for the intro, the other for the body). It really shouldn't take you much to make this work I'd think. Edit the Slash::Submit plugin's displayForm;submit;default, modify the <textarea wrap="virtual" rows="[% user.textarea_rows || constants.textarea_rows %]" cols="[% user.textarea_cols || constants.textarea_cols %]" name="story">[% form.story | strip_literal %]</textarea><br> w/ the FCK calls and then see how it goes. I'm not worried about text browsers; I personally use Lynx for SEO analyzing, but that's about it. I've got a different kind of site, if you don't get the visuals/videos etc, then you wouldn't be on my site anyway. As long as I cover Firefox and IE, that's all I'm worried about. You can set up the FCKEditor to have limited options instead of all of them so users can't make a total mess of what they type. If an HTML tag is missed every once in a while, I can live with that and correct it on my own. I get the geek angle, and it works for SlashDot because of the audience, but in my case I'm just going to get a lot of confused sheep. - Jim www.duncecapjokes.com "Larson, Timothy E." <TEL...@we...> wrote: Jim Frey wrote: > Now my question, has anyone ever thought of putting > http://www.fckeditor.net into the story submissions? Might be nice, depending on your needs. But slash evidently has a post validation that strips out lots of HTML as well as character entities, so unless that is easily customized, supporting an HTML editor is a waste. (One wouldn't have to limit posts to certain tags if there were a generalized way to make sure the post was a valid fragment, i.e. opened tags were closed, etc. One assumes the allowed tag selection - mostly phrase level markup - was chosen so that it couldn't screw up slash's page layout if an element was left unclosed.) And what about text browsers? Mustn't forget the lowest common denominator. I've posted to slashdot from lynx before. Hi list, I'd really like trackback capabilities for slash. I understand Slashdot=20 doesn't need this (any site -knows- it has been slashdotted ;-). But a=20 lot of smaller sites would benefit from such a feature: sending a=20 trackback ping signal to original content websites indicating the=20 slashsite host a link to the original content website. (To keep it=20 simple, I'd do it one-way, sending pings only, not answering to=20 trackback pings and manage link spamming) I logged this as a feature request a few months ago=20 (http://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=3Ddetail&aid=3D1409562&gro= up_id=3D4421&atid=3D354421=20 ), but I doubt anything will be done soon. After reading on trackbacks, simply sending a trackback ping looks very=20 easy and straitforward. But I'm no programmer... :-) If nobody on the=20 list wants to code such a plugin, another slashsite owner encouraged me=20 to do the following: trying to gather as much people required to pay for=20 the development of the plugin (I've been told some other plugin was=20 developed this way). I have no idea how much this would cost, but as a first step, I invite=20 anybody interested in a trackback plugin to email me in private. Any=20 comment is welcomed, of course! Cheers :-) Alex http://slashgeo.org --=20 Alexandre Leroux, M.Sc., Ing. Your approach would work. I refer to topics like that as "abandoned", but a better term is probably "parentless". You could have also changed the weight, and left them related to the parent. An easy way to "see how the weighting works" is to do the following: 1. install a barebones slash-site. 2. there are topics such as linux and slash and slashcode. pick one. change the weight on it, regarding how it weighs against the "main" topic. 3. restart slashd, httpd 4. site-admin-stories-new 5. add the topic that you editted to the story. click preview. it will show you where, or not, the story will be posted. now remove the topic, click preview. 6. repeat #2, and change the weight to a different value. (like I said, 1,30,10 are common if you grep the code I think they are the differentiating values that directly control behavior). 7.repeat #5. rinse and repeat on #6 and #7 till you're understanding how the weights affect *where* a story is to be shown. 8. then remove the topic who's weight you modified from the story and add a non-weight-modified topic to the story. click preview. lookup this non-weight-modified topic's weight. note the difference, and the different behavior between 1,10,30, and any values you would choose to set that are in-between them all (and also higher then 30). If you do all of the above, and then read up on the articles on lottadot that are related to all this you'll probably have one of those "oh I get it" moments. hope that helps. We used to use Geeklog and switched to Slash on May 25. Running Slash about 40 days so far. User submit a story, if accepted, will get 3 points. if 10 articles accepted, he will get 30 points, plus comment points, so there are many of our users have reached max 50 now. BTW, we now have about 3k members, 6k uniques and 15k PVs every day. of course, We are very very small compare to Slashdot, we are 1% of Slashdot, hehe..
