I know you said it is working now, but you might want to tell the creator
of that page that their RSS file is broken.  It contains this illegal XML:

       <title>Camp4.com & Netscape Communications</title>

The ampersand must be encoded as "&amp;" or else it is broken, and no
working XML parser will be able to handle it.  The only reason Slash can
handle it is that we've added code to seek and destroy unencoded ampersands
before sending it to the XML parser.

It is just one extra complication we didn't get around to doing.  On the
one hand it seems easy, but on the other ... what if the encoding for your
site ALLOWS these characters?  Then maybe you wouldn't want them encoded.
It could be a preference, of course, but I hope you can see why it isn't as
easy as just doing a conversion on submission.

Where do you have a UTF-8 string?

I am pretty sure it just returns raw data.  If you put in a u with an
umlaut (Latin-1 character 252), then that is what you should get in return.

  use XML::RSS;
  $x = XML::RSS->new(encoding=>"ISO-8859-1");
  $y = XML::RSS->new(encoding=>"ISO-8859-1");
  $x->channel(title => chr(252));
  $y->parse($x->as_string);
  print ord $y->{channel}{title};

Returns:

  252

That's just Latin-1.  There's no UTF-8 string there.

Using HTML::Entities all this is no problem at all (despite the work to

Just do a decode_entities() followed by a encode_entities() for every
text-input.
Sure it would be better to *not* store HTML-entities in the DB. With
encode_entities() you could generate them everytime some text from the
db ist to be sent over HTTP.

But all of this doesn't have to do anything with the problem I have:
encode_entities() can't convert UTF-8 encoded strings :-(
And I still think that XML::Parser returns all strings in UTF-8 after
doing a parse() regardless the encoding of the strings before.
If you still don't believe have a look at http://wurbel.spline.de and
select the "Heise Newsticker"-box from "Benutzeraccount" on the left.

(And for sure p.e. mozilla can display umlauts without the need for them
being encoded)

One of the point of Slash is to have less-computer-literated people work
with the system with no troubles. Asking them to change characters they
have on their keyboard with HTML entities is not very popular and
probably not useful. Is it possible/reasonable to have a conversion from
special chars to entities built in the admin interface?

P.S. Thanks to Chris for looking into these hairy problems which are
really important for us old Europeans. :-)

...so slashd does generate static pages every so often. That's good. :-)
I did a test for this, and while it posted a story to the main page, that
story is triplicated in the Story list. I hope that's not a common
occurence, and some other housekeeping routine removes duplicates? Or did I
goof again? I swear I didn't restart slashd multiple times between posting
the story and the duplicates appearing.

You haven't started slashd, have you?  :)

Every five minutes, slashd calls setStoryIndex() which copies your
stories from the stories to the newstories table.  If it's not in
the newstories table, it won't be on your homepage.  The code's in
bender/sbin/slashd and bender/Slash/DB/Static/MySQL/MySQL.pm.
Start up slashd with your init.d script, hm, maybe that should be
clearer in the INSTALL doc...

I just upgraded to 2.0.0-pre1 and I can't get slashd to start.
It gives me the following error message:
We don't support the database () specified.
Using virtual user ' ' at usr/local/lib/perl/......../DB.pm line 58
Can't locate object method "sqlConnect" via package "Slash::DB" at 
/usr/local/lib/perl/......./DB.pm line 64
why am I here? at ./slashd line 36
                   main::END() called at ./slashd line 0
                   require 0 called at ./slashd line 0

Any suggestions.  Im still pretty new at all this stuff but, I've 
learned a lot, any help will greatly appreciated.

There was a patch.  There's a link to the bug at the URL above.  It was
just a missing comma in Slash.pm.  Syntax error.

Yes.  There's not be one in the past, for developer aqnd beta releases, but
for the final version, and future versions, we will have to do something
for upgrading.

Will there be an upgrade script from -pre1 or is there anything we should
keep in mind while we are working with and customizing -pre1 that will make
it eassier when the GM comes out.

Why not 2.0.0-pre1?  1.1.6 has a lot more bugs in it that 2.0.0-pre1 does.

beta version.  -pre1 is kinda post-beta, pre-release.  It's stable, but has
a bunch of little bugs that we are still squashing.

under my nose, but I can't seem to look past it ;-)

I have installed slash-1.1.6-bender and all modules, MySQL etc. The site
runs, I've created topics, sections, new users, posted stories (as admin
userid), posted submissions as anonymous coward, and as other users,
organized blocks on page to suit my site, etc. BUT.

I don't see posted stories on main index page, regardless of "section"
and "topic" stories are posted to 8-(

Base stats.

RH Linux kernel 2.2-14.5
Perl 5.6.0
Apache 1.3.14
MySQL 3.23.33-1

Only error messages getting so far are from apache error_log file
"sitename_error_log" saying some stories could not be posted due to NULL
"section" and "department" values, but most posted stories appear to be
database.

I checked slashd, and I restarted using virtual hostid, and confirmed
via top it's running.

Any clues to what is wrong, or at least where to look for problem.

Chomping at the bit to start hosting.

Two ways. Go back to the directory where you downloaded it too
