Generally? Ease of use. It's more easy to use: http://section.domain.com/ than it is to do http://domain.com/index.pl?section=name Easier to remember for most people. Personally, I can go either way since I've used Slash for so long. WRT a non-root install, it *is* hard to do. At some point, you need your sysadmin's cooperation.
