Someone asked off-list how we fixed it, and I figure I might as
well send that to the list.

Since it was our search database and we could do without it for
a day, the solution was simple:  disable access, mysqldump -le
the whole thing, and pipe the dump back into 'mysql' to recreate
it from scratch.  Then restart replication.

This may have less enjoyable results on a database in use.
