YMMV, but on RedHat and Mandrake, I always _uninstall_ all perl rpms, and 
then install perl from source as the first step. use 'rpm -e --nodeps perl' 
and 'rpm -e --nodeps perl-base'.. there may be others, check with 'rpm -qa | 
sort' and uninstall anything perl.

Get perl as 'stable.tar.gz' from cpan.org, and build just as the INSTALL file 
suggests. Then install mod_perl, apache and mysql from source as directed. 
That always gives me a clean build, and 'install Bundle::Slash' gives me no 
problems.

Nothing ill should come from you removing the binary perl distribution from 
redhat, as long as you don't try to reboot without perl installed on the 
machine. I think the initscripts need perl, as well as others.
