[Slashcode-general] Is extracolumns for real?

I'm hoping that this is no mirage, that stories can have little extras
depending on their section. I've gotten as far as seeing "Extra Data for
This Section" on the story editor -- but no fields to fill in. I see
extracolumn stuff all over admin.pl. And lines 1921-7 of Slash.pm read:

        # get extra data from section table for this story
        # (if exists)
        # this only needs to run for slashdot
        # why is this commented out?  -- pudge
        # Its basically an undocumented feature
        # that Slash uses.
        #$slashdb->setSectionExtra($full, $story);

Are extra columns functional? How are they accessed?
