Password issue fixed ... and definitely not something expected ... my 
database was created based on the schema that came with the code (ie. it 
was a totally fresh / empty database) ... but figured to scan one more 
time the error_log while creating an account, I noticed that it was 
erroring while trying ot write to a newpasswd_ts field that didn't exist 
...

Checked teh updating file for the database, found the ALTER table, added 
it and now it works as expected ...

Not sure why the base schema doesn't have those changes in it mind you ... 
but another issue past ...
