the concept of forking :)

I wouldn't assume that it is unfortunate. Evolution of code comes in  
many ways, and if you find that your needs are not being met, I would  
encourage you to take the code and do what you need with it. Slash has  
been forked a zillion times for many reasons. Needing to do releases  
is not that bogus of a reason at all :)
