[Slashcode-development] databases

got a coding question - what's the logic that's generally used for when the 
'reader' db is used instead of normally calling either the var pointing to 
the db (generally $slashdb) or in the case of a plugin $someplugindbname).

and is it generally wanted that we put code into our code for slash such that 
it'll use the reader db, if defined?

Just curious. I've seen the code now in slash countless times, but don't 
recall any discussion of it.
