further to this, this is what i've been finding in my error log:

DBI->connect(database=news;host=localhost) failed: Can't connect to local
MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (111) at

and my mysql server is running. is this perhaps a problem with my mysql
server config or the way in which it was compiled?
