No, that shouldn't be necessary.

Although, personally, I peridoically do upgrade all my modules.  I can't
recommend that, though, because occasionally an upgrade breaks things.  :-)
However, for those that care, this is my normal procedure:

* run CPAN shell
* type "r" and return
* get list of all modules that can be upgraded
* run "install MODULE" for each one I want to upgrade
