No, I had pasted everything in my httpd.conf, and had customized several
things.  Including the one slash built was to test if it was my problem.

I think I had not updated the section that doesn't go in VirtualHost
sections, and was missing something.  I haven't had time to figure out
quite what yet.

Speaking of the configurations, shouldn't the AddType XML stuff go outside
the VirtualHost sections, not repeated in each?  And it seems like some
things in the main section could screw up other virtual hosts on the same
machine that don't use slash, e.g.
  DirectoryIndex index.pl index.shtml
which could break hosts that use index.html
