I'm using firefix 1.5.0.9 and very often it will freeze when I open a slashdot discussion, usually on the bigger discussions. I've reverted to using the previous system and all is well.
I suspect this is a firefox bug as well as a WinXP bug manifesting itself throught firefox.
Basically what happens is the firefox freezes and grabs 100% of the CPU, after that occasionally when I kill firefox the entire machine crashes too (thanks WinXP).

Have you tried FF 2?

I just installed FF2 and it also crashes/freezes/hogs CPU. Although I have get to crash WinXP totally like FF1.5 does.
It only seems to crash on the large threads. Threads with less than 100 (or so) messages seem to work OK.

Can you give me your user name and a URL of a discussion that crashes you? I have a very old PC with WinXP on it that I use for testing, and it seems to handle discussions OK, but maybe there's something in your user prefs different from mine causing a problem. Also, what are the specs on your machine (CPU, memory, anything else of importance)?

This one crashes it reliably:
http://apple.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/01/10/1546223
It only crashes once the page is fully loaded (or appears to be fully loaded)
CPU : Centrino 2 Core
Mem: 2Gig (just firefox and thunderbird running)
Video: Nvidia 1920x1200 (it is running nView)

Something is screwy here. I am using FF 1.5.0.8 on a very old Pentium and WinXP and nothing crashes. Nothing nearly as capable as your box (Pentium II with 256MB RAM!). Now, we did just update the code on Slashdot tonight, you could try again ... ?
