The new tagging system installed on /. today crashes Safari 2.0.4 (419.).
Just open the tag box type something in and hit enter. Mine dies every
time. Worked YESTERDAY. No updates installed before it started.
ROLLBACK! PLEASE!

I'm on Safari 2.0.4 (419.3) and most of our dev team uses Macs. We haven't noticed this. Anything unusual about your system
we should know? Try doing a shift-reload of our homepage and then do a fresh reboot and try it with no other apps running...
    same thing?

    Ok try this...

Open /. and tag something. (This gets the tag suggestion system loaded)
Goto the Story about "US Citizens to Require ''Clearance'' to Leave?" And type "stay". (seemed funny, they're treating us like dogs)
The word "stay" will disappear and the word "stupid" will be highlighted. (was that a hint?)
    Hit return.
    Safari should crash.
    Repeat.

For real fun select "Try Again" after your second crash. ;)

I just tried this on my G4 Mac Mini which is completely clean of all non-Apple apps except for an old version of SecondLife. Does the
same thing. Note that My main machine is a QuickSilver 2002 G4. (Just in case it doesn't happen on Intel machines or G5s)

For more fun I tried a few other browsers. No problem in FireFox 2.

However under White Box Enterprise Linux 4 Respin 1 in Konqueror, just clicking the triangle to open tags crashes it. IceWeasel seems to
    do ok though.

I'd try in in IE but I don't allow Windows anywhere near the internet. :)

Further abuse of my browser seems to indicate that it's related to the tag NOT being on the list. In the last episode I tagged the nuke story
"nuclear" with no problems. But then added "tagtest" and it crashed. Went back and typed in "tagtest" again and instead of hitting enter I
clicked the Tag button and it took it. Then I tried to add "tagtag" and it crashed on the second t without getting to enter.

What version OS X for each Mac? I have no problems, duplicating what you say on my Mac, but it's Intel (Mac Pro). I have
a G4 Mac Mini but it's running Safari 1.3.2 on OS X 10.3.9 and the predictive tag code doesn't seem to be active. If you
can confirm for me which exact OS and Safari version your G4 Mac Mini is running I could try upgrading it maybe.

Oh. Sorry. 10.4.8 With all updates on both. Mini is same (Safari 2.0.4 (419.3)) as QuickSilver 2002.

The exact same problem is reproducible in Konqueror 3.5.5, so it's probably an issue that stems back to an
    older version of KJS even.

In the meantime, can you roll back that system for Safari/Konqueror users for now? Please?

We've found Safari crashes too, and will be working on fixing them. Thanks for reporting this, stay tuned...

Ok. I officially give up. I've switched to FireFox for viewing /. and as a result I got rid of the annoying Flash ads too. Funny that of all the website /. would be the one to make me start using it.

And I've also discovered before the last crash that you can not enter a new word unless it's longer than the suggestion. I tried to enter "spit" for http://science.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/11/14/0451228 and it kept changing to "spitzer".

Seriously. THIS IS THE WORST PIECE OF CRAP EVER INTRODUCED into SlashCode! It's even annoying on FireFox. I hate you all now.

We think we actually fixed the crashing behavior the day after you switched.

The quick workaround to the "changing your short word to a longer word" behavior is to press space immediately after you finish typing each word. We realize this is annoying. There's another misfeature (or two) that's annoying too. We're working to improve the experience before we bring it out of beta. Please don't hate us.

Fun things in FireFox include you change a suggestion and it changes it back. REPEATEDLY. Also had the suggestion appear elsewhere on the screen instead of under the text box.

Can I just loath you then?

Here's an idea! Just make it OPTIONAL in preferences.

I have temporarily disabled this machinery (as of next update to the servers) for Safari, until I can find the crash. The crash is, as far as I can tell right now, happening inside the JS interpreter.

I _really_ think I've disabled autocomplete in Safari/Konq as of common.js@1.101; this is a temporary (and overdue) fix until I can find the underlying problem in KJS.
