Gearing up for new language

As you may or may not know, I am planning to rewrite sked in a different language very soon. Perl has proven unsuitable for serious OOP. I am currently evaluating three choices for a replacement language: Java, Smalltalk, and Ruby. I know quite a bit about some of these languages and very little about others.

I am doing this evaluation in parallel with current development (the event editing UI). I plan to begin translation immediately after the next release. The next release will happen as soon as the event editing UI provides basic functionality.
