This would make the e100 eth0 during the > install. Actually, it has nothing to do with the install kernel. The ordering used to be based on pc location, now it is based on module name (as there were some issues with eepro100 before). As this doesn't seem to be doing it for folks, I just made a change in 2.0.4 to the following: 1) Go back to basing the order on location in the pci bus 2) add grouping, i.e. all cards of the same "type" (eepro100, etc) will show up as sequential aliases. This holds true for scsi cards as well as network cards 3) Create a new stanza so it can be overriden if people still want it some other way. The new stanza is as follows: [HARDWARE] ORDER =3D e1000 e100 pcnet32 etc... During modules.conf creation, all modules found in ORDER will be promoted to the front of the modules list (and hence the front of the aliases list) in the order listed. So for the example above, if any e1000 cards were found, all e1000 aliases would come first, no matter where they sat on the pci bus. 2.0.4 should go out today, the changes are already in CVS if you can't wait. -Sean --=20 _______________________________________________________________________ =09 Sean Dague se...@da... http://dague.net There is no silver bullet. Mike, Hmm... really need LVM. Yes, the image finished building put haven't been able to find a way to apply it yet. Can't get the boot cd to work. As to your questions, we're using RedHat Linux 8.0 (2.4.18-14 kernel which has lvm-mod LVM 1.0.3 builtin) If you were to add LVM to the systemimager kernel you would probably want to add either LVM 1.0.6 (bugs fixed) or LVM 2.0 (understand Sistina still considers this beta but supposedly its ready - has device mapper support - metadata compatible with LVM1). The hardware is our own brew - Abit KG7-RAID single Athlon 1.4 Thunderbird boards FSB133 using 4x256MB PC2100 DDR266 mem w/onboard HPT370 RAID controller (the 2.4.x kernel supports this controller right now but only in IDE mode - understand that the HPT370/372 RAID controller will be supported in RAID mode in one of the next 2.4.xx kernels - we're waiting for that to happen so we can enable the HPT mirroring - this setup allows us to have windows and linux dual-boot all RAIDED under the same RAID control mechanism - the dual-boot is only used in development but we only want one type of RAID mechanism to support whether dev or production so HPT RAID fits the bill). All HDD are ATA100 plus a CDROM and floppy - that's it. Regards, Gerry Reno --- Michael Chase-Salerno <mi...@ch...> wrote: > SIS doesn't support LVM at this time. SIS doesn't support LVM at this time. I'm not sure what would be required since I haven't looked at it at all up to this point. I don't think the systemimager kernel has LVM support in it, so even if you get the image to build, I don't think it will be able to apply it to the client. Brian or Dan can verify that. Some of the errors you are seeing are, indeed, normal, as Sean said. The fstab and the missing users all shouldn't be a problem. Some of the other errors that look like syntax problems may cause some more issues. Does the image actually finish building successfully? If so, you can just try and use it and see what happens. What type of hardware are you running this on? Since the boot of the autoinstallcd is failing, there probably is some sort of incompatibility there. Well, I did a mkautoinstallcd and burned the image, booted the client with the cd and.... boot: boot: loading kernel..... boot failed! So, I'm not sure what is wrong at this point. I have been trying to get buildimage working for the past couple days and I may have succeeded but I'm not sure yet. One of my main concerns is whether SIS supports LVM which we use. Here is the latest output from running buildimage: /sbin/mkinitrd: line 434: [: : integer expression expected awk: cmd. line:2: fatal: cannot open file `/etc/fstab' for reading (No such file or directory) awk: cmd. line:2: fatal: cannot open file `/etc/fstab' for reading (No such file or directory) awk: cmd. line:2: fatal: cannot open file `/etc/fstab' for reading (No such file or directory) /sbin/new-kernel-pkg: line 63: [: ==: unary operator expected awk: cmd. line:2: fatal: cannot open file `/etc/fstab' for reading (No such file or directory) ls: : No such file or directory warning: user mw does not exist - using root warning: group csg does not exist - using root warning: user mw does not exist - using root warning: group csg does not exist - using root Cannot stat file: /usr/share/gnome/help/glade-2/C/faq.xml : No such file or directory So I guess my question is whether this is normal output or not and whether anyone knows if SIS can currently support LVM. Gerry, Just got your flood of email (as I'm on vacation till the first of the year). The best way to get help on these issues is to post to sis...@li.... There are a number of folks there who have expertise in this issues, Mike Chase-Salerno been the prime one for build image issues. The lack of an etc/fstab in the image is normal. It is created during image installation. LVM may be more interesting though. Right now there isn't explicit support for it. There are folks interested in making this happen, so we may be able to work together to get that feature in there. -Sean=20 On Sun, Dec 22, 2002 at 01:08:37PM -0800, grenoml wrote: > Hi Sean, > Well I made it quite a bit farther by spending about two hours hand > editing and testing the package file until finally all the dependencies > were satisfied. There has been an issue with grub and labels with the new code, which seemed to be fixed (U Penn folks were running things fine). If you can add '--verbose' to the 'systemconfigurator' line in the autoinstallscript, and send the output, that would be great. -Sean On Thu, Dec 12, 2002 at 06:31:04PM +0000, Andrew Bennett wrote: >=20 > hiya. >=20 > we have recently got some appro boxes to set up a proof of concept=20 > cluster system. >=20 > rh8.0 is installed on the image server, and rh8.0 on the golden client. >=20 > all went well, once I'd re-enabled rsyncd on the image-server, the new=20 > clients were able to PXE boot, and rsync all the files fine. it all=20 > works very smoothly. >=20 > When it got to "Probing devices to guess BIOS drives. Irrespective of that, Li, if you are using SuSE, you need the latest (2.9.5) version of SystemImager to make it work. We've not done much testing of SuSE with 2.0.3 SystemImager. Also, is this a built image (using mksiimage) or a fetched image (using getimage)? I'm guessing this has to do with ramdisk generation, but I can't debug that without the --verbose output of SystemConfigurator. -Sean =20 --=20 _______________________________________________________________________ =09 Sean Dague se...@da... http://dague.net There is no silver bullet. Hi, Im having a few issues regarding installing a 28node cluster using Oscar and I think its down to SIS. I have dual gigabit ethernet onboard 27 of my nodes and Im using the master node ( with 1 gigabit port ). the problem arises after I get the initial pxe boot from the Oscar server, then a second dhcp request is submitted, which subsequently fails ( NODHCPOFFERS received ) I believe its possibly the sis kernel that doesn't support the onboard Gigabit adapters ( Intel 82546EB dual port Gigabit ) I know a manual install of RH7.3 works fine with this card . Does anyone have any ideas what to do or a kernel that supports this ? Cheers Russell |

I am unable to get OSCAR to pick up MAC Addresses with a 3COM 3C996B-T NIC but was unsuccessful with the kernel provided by OSCAR 1.1.2rh72. I have tried the kernel at the unofficial SIS kernel download site so I am wondering if this NIC is not supported at this time. As Always, any help is appreciated!
