When viewing a list of emails, the columns are often too small (e.g. date & subject). Changes to these are not saved, but I think they used to be. I think you changed the GUI implementation, but it seems like a downgrade :(
IMHO there is no need for the field widths to be per-folder, or at least this should be a rather lower priority. If doing it, I suggest following Outlook's simple example: The Sent/Outgoing folders should have one set of field width prefs, while all other folders should use one other set of field width prefs. Thus there would only be two sets of width prefs to store.

CORRECTION: YOU CAN ALREADY SAVE FIELD WIDTHS! You just need to use the "Settings/Save Settings" menu item.
