You know, i think eventually we should translate truetype directly to msil (and JIT compile it when we're able to).. should be good performance wise |

Okay, I will have some free time this weekend and I will attempt to get all the vm instructions decoded. Right now its more architectural than anything else, but I am making fast progress. I have most of the important tables decoded. I am going to dodge the obvious things like hinting etc. for now, and hopefully someone with typography experience joins later on. I am really hoping I will have something working on top of system.drawing by monday, even if its doesn't come out just right. This weekend is going to be busy :). -----Original Message----- From: Colin Burn <col...@ho...> Sent: 24 September 2008 03:59 PM To: sha...@li... It is just a preference. C# is the language of choice for .NET and I'd say most .NET devs are familiar with C#. Maintaining a C++/CLI project is possible, but not everyone is capable of doing so. Finally some of us do not want to reuse legacy code... Mike > -----Ursprüngliche Nachricht----- > Von: col...@da... [mailto:col...@da...] > Gesendet: Dienstag, 23. Hi Dennis: I have been working on the device driver model for SharpOS and as part of the MOSA project. Right now, SharpOS can not properly handle interrupts since the shell executes within an interrupt - which means all other interrupts are ignored - like the floppy device driver. The basic IDE driver works, however, since it's not interrupt driven due to the issues with interrupts - it uses polling instead. We are really attempting to solve these issues within MOSA framework (and later incorporate back into SharpOS, if everyone agrees). Neither project has yet to tackle the process/task scheduler - or the concept of a process or thread yet. However, I would like to work with you, if you are interested, on implementing a scheduler with thread blocking for IO requests (or even asynchronous IO operations). Even though we do not have a bootable OS (with the MOSA framework) we do have an emulated environment available which runs under the a hosted CLR environment. I have been using it to test and debug the disk partitions and file systems support, for example. We could probably do something similar with a scheduler and IO manager until we get a bootable OS. It turns out with the right abstractions and interfaces, for example to memory and IO ports, we can completely avoid unsafe code and pointers to real memory, and substitute proxies instead, like to a byte array to simulate real memory. With some skill and luck from the compiler developers, when the MOSA framework is bootable, the rest of the framework will work also. The best place to communicate is via IRC channels #sharpos or #mosa on the freenode network. I'm in southern California (unlike all the other German developers), so I'm available mostly in the evenings/nights pacific time. Also, subscribe to the MOSA mailing list, visit www.mosa-project.org for the links. Hi Dennis, Good work. I may not speak for everybody on this list, but here are my thoughts: - From a software engineering standpoint, SharpOS currently has no architecture at all. Mostly things are hacked together to work somehow. I'm not certain if anyone is able to help you. - Some of the devs, who are very concerned about this are just now starting these things in the scope of the MOSA project. (shameless plug: www.mosa-project.org) - It is the goal (at least my understanding) to reuse/adopt MOSA components in order to have a properly architected kernel model. Anyhow to answer your questions: An I/O manager is a central component of any operating system. Some may not explicitly state that though. The I/O manager is responsible for many things, like file system caching and I/O scheduling. So I'd say yes, there are plans to have an I/O manager at some point (independent of its source.) I'm right now finishing off my diploma thesis (HTW Dresden, Computer Science ;)) and hope to spend the freed time to start small working groups for key kernel components soon (again in the MOSA scope.) Hope this helps, Michael > -----Ursprüngliche Nachricht----- > Von: sha...@li... > [mailto:sha...@li...] Im > Auftrag von Dennis Gronewold > Gesendet: Mittwoch, 17. Hello everyone, my name is Dennis Gronewold, I'm studying computer science at the university of Duesseldorf, Germany and I'm currently writing my bachelor's thesis about managed operating systems in general and SharpOS in particular. My goal is to implement a basic scheduler for SharpOS using the multilevel feedback queue algorithm. I have it mostly working, and am now looking into testing thread blocking on I/O requests. I have not yet developed a deeper understanding of the driver architecture and thought maybe some of you guys can help me out. For now, I just need a simple way to start an I/O request from a thread, have the dispatcher notified to block this thread and wake it up again when the request completes. I'm not sure if it's possible with the current state of things. I have been fiddling around with the floppy disk driver, but could not get it working. I have been looking into the Windows Driver Model and it has an I/O-Manager to start the I/O, notify the dispatcher etc.. Are there plans on implementing something like that in SharpOS? So much for now, Dennis |

Newsletter 1 Introduction My name is Michael Ruck, also known as "grover". I'm one of the founders of the MOSA effort and am pleased to bring you this newsletter, which will hopefully be published more regularly in the future. MOSA Project The Managed Operating System Alliance (MOSA) Framework is a set of compiler tools and libraries, such as a just-in-time compiler, for managed operating systems based on the Common Intermediate Language. We have created a project website at http://www.mosa-project.com <http://www.mosa-project.com/> . The website provides various services to manage the MOSA project, holds specifications, wiki descriptions and bug trackers. MOSA now has its own SVN server at svn://svn.mosa-project.com/ and mailing lists <http://listserv.mosa-project.org/cgi/wa.exe> . We also have setup an IRC channel #mosa on the FreeNode network for quick chats around MOSA topics. MOSA Compiler The MOSA compiler has been progressing quickly due to the help of MOSA developer rootnode and is close to reaching its first milestone. The compiler already passes 31 individual tests combined into 12 test cases. The x86 backend already supports features a lot of features, such as basic integral and floating point arithmetics (addition, subtraction, division, multiplication), logical operations (And, Or, Not, Xor), shifting operators, static method calls, branch operations, load and store instructions. The planned feature list for the first compiler milestone is available in the MOSA <http://www.mosa-project.com/wiki/mosa-compiler/Release_001> Wiki. The compiler framework provides several optimization stages, such as Single Static Assignment, Constant Propagation and Constant Folding. We are working on some more optimization algorithms, including a simple register allocator for the first milestone. MOSA Kernel The MOSA Kernel Project <http://www.mosa-project.com/wiki/mosa-kernel> has opened its doors to facilitate better specification development. The purpose of the kernel project is not aimed to provide another managed open source kernel, but to foster managed operating system development as a whole by defining common interfaces and providing default implementations of these interfaces. This enables other open source projects to reuse our components to create their operating system. We strongly ask all interested projects to contribute to this project to ensure interoperability. MOSA Devices In an effort to reduce duplicate device driver development between various managed OS projects, the MOSA project also proposes a common driver model framework and driver implementations for common hardware devices. Device drivers may only use safe code to help ensure stability of the entire system. Job Positions The MOSA Team is seeking new developers interested in standardized interfaces for managed operating systems, creative people for artwork, documentation and process management. We also seek an Editor for the next newsletters. Final Notes This is the last newsletter to be sent out on the managed operating system mailing lists. In future we will only send out MOSA news on the MOSA <http://listserv.mosa-project.org/cgi/wa.exe?A0=MOSA-ANNOUNCE-LIST> Announcement Mailing List. |

Hi Iraklis, Apparently you haven't seen my reply to your previous introductory mail. Anyways here it is again: Welcome to the mailing list. I can't suggest an activity for you and I'm sure others feel the same way. If you want to contribute, just read the mailing list (archives) and if an interesting topic crops up that you think is worthwile to pursue, go ahead and get involved there. There's a lot of work to do everywhere. Mike > -----Ursprüngliche Nachricht----- > Von: sha...@li... > [mailto:sha...@li...] Im > Auftrag von Iraklis Karagkiozoglou > Gesendet: Sonntag, 3. I am not able to reproduce the problem on my local machine. But there are a few things I can suggest trying. If you are running Windows Vista, make sure you launch your command prompt in Administrative mode. I also know that sometimes Windows has problems with long paths. Try moving your working copy to the root of the drive, (i.e. C:\SharpOS\ ). Also try an 'nant clean' before retrying an 'nant dist' or an 'nant run'. |

I can't help you right now, but this mail from Jonathan should help with your proxy problem: Hi All, Something to put up on your Wiki. Go to http://www.mibbit.com/widget.html and set up a widget and provide a link in your wiki. Look at http://www.ensemble-os.org/wiki/core/IRC_Channel for more info.
