I had a thought this weekend. I had noticed that the current SFBonline uses an IRC server to handle the communications. Why couldn't we find an existing IRC server and just modify the code to include our game modules? This has the advantages of using a well-documented protocol, the code is already there to handle multiple users and games, using IRC channels. I'm sure we could find plenty of IRC client source code to base the client on. All we would need to do is modify the server to plug into our game modules that process the rules. There is also the added advantage that the modified IRC server could be used to handle any different game modules. Just a thought. I'll check out the feasibility of this.
