I use 7-zip to create a password-protected zipped file with one excel spreadseet. I then extracted the excel spreadsheet, edited it, and dropped it back into the zip folder. A prompt came up asking if I want to copy and replace the file. I click Copy and Replace. And the zipped file is no longer password-protected? Is this expected behaviour?
The excel file is a macro-enabled file that has sensitive data. However, if I password protect the excel file, the macros won't run until the password is removed. As I'm sending the excel file to bosses who aren't that savvy with excel, I don't want to give instructions to them to first remove the password, save the excel file, close and re-open so that the macros can run. Then when they are done with the file, they will need to password protect the file before sending me back.
I thought it would be easier if I zip up the excel file with a password. The bosses need only key in the password to extract and run the macro-enabled excel file without all those steps above. And when they are done editing, they can just drop the excel file into the zip folder and email me back. However, when I drop the edited excel file into the zip folder, I found that the zip folder password has been voided. I don't want to have to give instructions to the bosses to password protect the zip folder before sending me back.
