Is it possible to allow 7Zip to support custom file extensions, or to allow 7Zip to examine an archive's internal file structure to determine if 7Zip can open a file as a supported archive type? We have some archives that are actually zip files internally but they have another file extension. Renaming the files to be *.zip isn't an option, so I was looking for a method to allow 7Zip to either open the archive automatically or to maintain a map of custom file extensions and archive type. It is very easy to have windows file manager to associate or map custom file extensions to 7Zip but alas 7Zip refuses to open the file, and reports it as an unknown file type.

You can do it by associating selected extension with program of your choice. Here you choose 7zip.

yes its very easy to have file explorer associate a file extension to 7zip. however once file explorer opens 7zip with the file in question. 7zip refuses to open the file because it doesn't reconize the file's extension. what i was hoping for was a way to get 7zip to go ahead and open the file by interpretating the file's internal structure, or by having an custom association link my file's extension as a zip file.

    I get what you mean.
It's strange what you say though cause when I tried to open with 7zFM an .asd file, that was .7z in fact, it worked. Same when I put 7zFM in SendTo directory then it works as well.

Here are some screen caps. you can see that 7Zip is associated with files of type *.kss but when 7Zip tries to open the file it reports Unsupported command:

      There are 7zFM.exe and 7zG.exe in 7-Zip.
You must open archives with 7zFM.exe.

Thanks Igor, That did the trick. I re-associated my custom file extension with 7zFM.exe and Yes double clicking the file opened the archive. I guess I had originally associated my extension with the GUI version. Thanks you for the clarification!

        Love your product BTW

OK, I tried some of your suggestions, and I did find a way to get 7Zip to open the file.
    1) double clicking - doesn't work
    2) open with doesn't work
    3) show more options -> 7-zip -> open archive worked!

Corrected -- So I guess it sort of works. It's too bad that a simple double click fails. I've see similar behavior in 7Zip when trying to open some archives created on some Linux systems (rar or gz archives) .
But hey thanks for taking an interest! -- Cheers

Igor just clarified my trouble. My custom extension was associated with the GUI version not the FM version. I changed my association and it works perfectly
