    Hi guys,
I've got a Toshiba laptop with no sound, and my final chance to rescue it is to flash the Insyde BIOS. Toshiba is very tight-fisted with their BIOS, though. They only offer the latest version, and it is set to version-check. If the machine already has even the same version, it will not proceed. So a refresh is not normally possible.

The only way around this is to unpack the bios .exe file and change some .ini paramaters in it, and then save the edited archive. The problem is that 7zip is not allowing me to save any changes. It says the file is read-only.

In Windows, the file is not labeled read-only. I also have ownership and full-control over the file in Permissions, and I've moved the archive to an unrestricted area, the Desktop before working on it. So I don't think the problem is at that level. But when I examine the file's Properties within 7zip, I see no restrictions there either.

Is there some way to edit this file in 7zip?

    Thanks much.

7-Zip supports "unpacking" for many formats, and it supports "packing" feature only for 7z, XZ, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR, ZIP and WIM. So it's "read-only" for all another formats.

If I understand you correctly, I found that out. I unpacked the .exe, made the changes successfully, but then was unable to wrap it again into an .exe. So, stuck. Is there no other way to do this?

A ha. I found out what to do. Simply copy the pertinent bios files to a new folder, and fire them there. The executable will find the .ini and the .dlls and the flash went perfectly, no need to rewrap the whole thing. It didn't fix my hardware issue, but that's another matter.

    Thanks.
