7Zip can handle the extraction. To mAke these
multi-volume RAR-Archives you need WinRAR.
For extraction: to see all content open the first volume of the multi-volume archive, typically named: 'filename.part1.rar' or 'filename.rar'. Select the files you want extracted. Hit the extract button.

Looking for the problem I packed up the very exciting fileset:

Extract without confirmation in WinRAR result=ok
the same fileset as mentioned -no surprise-.
- now startup filemanager '7zFM.exe'
- select C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\test\test.part1.rar
and hit extract - result=ok, the same fileset as mentioned.
- select C:\WINDOWS\Desktop\test\test.part1.rar
- now open test.part1.rar, use 'Cntrl+A' to select all files and
hit extract - result=ok, the same fileset as mentioned.
Rightclick and 'extract here' on 'test.part1.rar' result=ok in
both WinRAR and 7Zip.
So here was no problem with extraction.
As long as it is not a problem where 7Zip and WinRAR treat the
archive different, we can still say that 7Zip handles extraction ok.
Having said that, I do have encountered your problem myself, just
don't know how to reproduce it in a hurry.
If it's only one file that asks to overwrite, you can try to unpack
the archive twice to two separate locations to have both extracted.
Alternatively if it's not a solid archive, you may be able to unpack
the volumes separately.
Give it your best shot.. :)

what would really be nice is if at the end of one file it would prompt for the next archive and where it is. Example...WinRAR multi-arc SFX onto CDs. At the end of one cd it prompts for the location of the next piece of the archive set, ie the next cd. of course one could use the fileset switch if they wanted to dump all the CDs into a file and then extract them.

Here's the SOLUTION to this problem.
7-zip can't extract the files (or ask you to overwrite) if the archives are named like the standard WinRAR sequence:
- file.rar
- file.r00
- file.r01
- etc...
The sequence must be either:
- file.any01.rar
- file.any02.rar
- etc...
or:
- file.any01
- file.any02
- etc...
Notice that it must start with 01, it won't work with 00.

Sigh: multi volume arj files do not work either. I think that proper multi volume support for ALL supported faormats should be point one in the TODO list.

Can 7-zip handle these RAR archives split into multiple parts? Or do you need winRAR for them?

when i do that, all that happens is that when it goes from .r01 to .r02 it asks me if i want to overwrite the file extracted from .r00.

7Zip needs to support multipart RAR files, it currently does NOT.
normally you just extract the .rar and it finds the other parts automatically. Why doesnt 7zip do this?
This is a MAJOR limitation as multipart RAR files are VERY VERY common unfortunately.
This is the biggest disappointment of 7zip that would otherwise be a great tool.
7zip DOES continues on r01, r02, etc, automatically.
An example where it doesn't?
