    7-Zip 9.29 alpha was released.

    This is a development version.
Don't use 7-Zip 9.29 alpha to process important files and archives.
If you need more stable version, you can use 7-Zip 9.25 alpha.

    7-Zip for 32-bit Windows:

    http://dl.7-zip.org/7z929.exe
    or
    http://dl.7-zip.org/7z929.msi

    7-Zip for 64-bit Windows x64:

    http://dl.7-zip.org/7z929-x64.msi

    What's new after 7-Zip 9.25 alpha:

    - LZMA2 now is default compression method for .7z format.
    - 7-Zip now can update WIM archives.
    - 7-Zip File Manager now can move files to archives.
    - 7-Zip File Manager now can calculate CRC-32, SHA-1 and SHA-256 checksums for files.
    - The default encoding for TAR format now is UTF-8. You can use -mcp=1 switch for OEM encoding.
    - Command line version:
        - new "rn" command to rename files in archive.
        - new -sdel switch to delete files after including to archive.
        - new -sns switch to store NTFS alternate streams (for WIM format only).
        - new -sni switch to store NT security information for files (for WIM format only).
        - new -stl switch to set archive timestamp from the most recently modified file.
    - Speed optimizations for opening big archives and big disk folders.
    - DMG support was improved
    - Some bugs were fixed.
    - New localization: Aragonese.

    What's new after 7-Zip 9.28 alpha:

    - 7-Zip now shows warning message, if the archive has wrong file name extension.
    - new -stl switch.

7-Zip 9.29 alpha version is provided without source code.
Source code will be released in future beta version.

Please write here about any new bugs.

I think you should mention _all_ the changes since the last release not just the most recent so people can test them too. eg Is the switch to enable duplicate filenames in different directories still included? etc etc J

    - 7-Zip now shows warning message, if the archive has wrong file name extension.

    7-Zip

    7-Zip

    n:\_My_ADDONs\7zip929\Help_7-Zip\929ru\7-Zip_Help_ru_9.28a.rar
Can not open the file as  archive
The file is open as  archive

    1. The localization for that message probably will be later.
    2. I'll change it to ICONWARNING in next version.

    Здравствуйте, Игорь
    Тестовый батник:

    @Echo Off
    rem OS - Win7 x64
rem bin - test folder for compression. (set of files installed 7-zip archiver)
    rem 928 - folder with files archiver 7-zip version 9.28. (7z.dll 7z.exe 7zG.exe)
    rem 929 - folder with files archiver 7-zip version 9.29. (7z.dll 7z.exe 7zG.exe)
    Del "%~dp0test.7z" "%~dp0test.rar" 2>Nul
    RD /q/s "%~dp0test928" "%~dp0test929" 2>Nul
    "%~dp0929\7z.exe" a "%~dp0test.7z" "%~dp0bin"
    Ren "%~dp0test.7z" "test.rar"
    "%~dp0928\7zG.exe" x "%~dp0test.rar" -o"%~dp0test928"
    "%~dp0929\7zG.exe" x "%~dp0test.rar" -o"%~dp0test929"
    "%~dp0928\7z.exe" t "%~dp0test.rar"
    Echo ==== ErrorLevel=%ErrorLevel% ====
    "%~dp0929\7z.exe" t "%~dp0test.rar"
    Echo ==== ErrorLevel=%ErrorLevel% ====
    Pause

    1 Извлечение\тестирование 7z архива с измененным расширением версией 9.28 происходит без ошибок, а версией 9.29 с отображением ошибки.
    - 7zG.exe останавливает работу батника при этом, хотя фактически архиватор справился с распаковкой и необходимости останавливать батник нет
    - 7z.exe возвращает код 2 - "Фатальная ошибка", хотя ошибки то нет.

Can not open the file as  archive
The file is open as as  archive

    1. Why it has incorrect file extension?
Is it OK for you, if it will return exit code = 1 (warning)?

Probably I need to improve that code.
I tried to solve some problems for broken archives,
For example, you have ISO image that contain ZIP archive.
If ISO image is broken, 7-Zip can open ZIP archive instead.

    1. Why it has incorrect file extension?

Is it OK for you, if it will return exit code = 1 (warning)?

    Hello,
When I load a big zipfile and open the context menu, it needs a very long time for opening. But if  I switch off the setting "Show System menu" in the options-dialog, all runs perfect. It seems there gives a problem with this option.
    I test this bug with 7-zip 9.28 and 9.29 x64 version.

Probably you have another ZIP (not 7-Zip) program in context menu and that program tries to read that ZIP file.
Do you have same delay when you look context menu for that file in Windows Explorer?
You can try to disable or uninstall other ZIP software.

My version before the update was 9.22 and now I installed 9.29 on Windows Vista 32. I don't know what version I used in 9.22 but in 9.29 I used the msi. Now there are two 7zip entries in programs and functions. There is no icon in version 9.29, it's blank.

Hello ipavlov, I have no other zip program installed, that tried to read that zipfile at same time. If I open the zipfile in windows explorer (win 7 pro) the context menu is opening immediately. In 7-zip it needs many seconds to showing the context menu inside a zipfile.

    @ipavlov

Are you aware of the problem with the jpeg-files inside ZIP archives? You can find more infos in the thread "Viewing zipped JPEG images".

Please fix this annoying bug in the next version.

  • Nutznieser

    Nutznieser - 2012-09-15

    @ipavlov
    Steps to reproduce the delay:
    1. Switch on the setting \"Show system menu\" in options dialog
    2. Open a big zipfile (e.g. one of them from "openiconlibrary"), but you can feel the delay also at smaller files
    3. Open the context menu to one file or folder inside the ziparchiv (with mouse right click)
… and you can see the delay
If the setting in options dialog is switched off, you have no one delay.

Hi ipavlov - thank you for your amazing work and efforts, you ROCK :) !!

I just noticed one little thing in general not working in 7zip (64bit) in Windows 8 (64bit) incl. your latest alpha: context menu. 'Tools/ Options/ 7zip: integrate 7-zip into shell context menu' does simply not stick in Win 8 RTM, not even when 7-zip is run via right-click, run as admin. I also restarted Explorer via Task Manager, no difference. Oddly WinRar does not have that problem with its context menu in Windows 8 Explorer, so it's definitely a current 7-zip bug, at least of the 64bit version in a 64 bit Windows 8 (don't have a 32 bit Win8 at hand, sorry).

Hope my bug report is of any help.

    Cheers,
    Lee

    c++:code.google.com/p/lz4/
    c#: github.com/stangelandcl/LZ4Sharp

Thank you, a thousand times over, for adding the timestamp option to the command line version. Not having meaningful timestamps has been the most frustrating part of using 7zip. This is a major improvement. I'm looking forward to this feature becoming stable so I can start using it in my production environment.

How I see WIM support is on high level, open new WIMs from Win8, changing files inside, just great!
But I want to ask something, - is there any possibility for adding support for WIMs from time when Vista was in developing process - I want to say support for managing Longhorn's WIMs with which in this time can be operate only with Ximage v2.0 for Windows XP, Server 2003 and also For Longhorn builds 4007, 4059, 5112?

Why do you need to look these old WIM files?
Probably they used old undocumented version of WIM.
So it's more difficult to support them. I don't want to spend time for it.

    Privet Igor,
in this version 9.29 archiver memory requirments much higer for dictionary 32Mb -> 1.2Gb for 7z.exe process in command line with lot files… Version 9.28 used memory as promised.

    Best regards,

    Oleg

  • Igor Pavlov

    Igor Pavlov - 2012-09-22

    It's LZMA2 multi-threading.
You can check memory requirements in GUI.
For 7z.exe you can reduce the number of threads:
    -mmt2
    or
    -mmt4
