OK. I downloaded it from filehippo.com. Is it legal?

You're probably violating US trade laws, but I'm in the US and I wouldn't care about doing that, so you shouldn't either.

Of course, none of us have any idea if the laws in Iran prohibit you from owning this software, you'd need to speak with a legal expert there.

I am not an attorney, barrister, counsel, lawyer, or solicitor.

    Q. Is FileHippo, a UK entity, in violation of UK-Iranian sanctions by allowing any Iranian person to download 7-Zip?
    A. The UK follows the EU Dual-Use List  which states:

    GENERAL SOFTWARE NOTE (GSN)
Categories 0 to 9 of this list do not control "software" which is either:
          a.  Generally available to the public by being:
            2.  Designed for installation by the user without further substantial support by the supplier

    Q. Is FileHippo, a UK entity, in violation of US-Iranian sanctions by allowing any Iranian person to download 7-Zip?
    A. Since 7-Zip's origin is Russia not the US, any US-Iranian sanction should not apply.

    Q. Is the possession and use of 7-Zip, which includes AES-256 encryption, in violation of Iranian laws?
    A. It is my understanding that the use of encryption is not allowed.

this is an issue with sourceforge forcing us laws on the world (and most sf mirrors I use are not in the us but in europe), that's why some of my favorite projects (notepad++) moved on to other sites, 7-zip is LGPL-ed and completely free but allowing blacklisted countries access to what the us might see as restricted technologies is forbidden for sourceforge not for 7-zip. I can't speak for Iran but using a free proxy to get 7zip from sf is allso quite legal, you if you are using Firefox should try anonymoX https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/anonymox/ but as mozilla is hosted in the us you can get it from the developers german site http://www.anonymox.net/
