Using 7-Zip version: 9.12 beta, OS: Windows-7 64-bit
I'm evaluating 7-Zip as a replacement for WinZip on our desktops;
I have set the "7-Zip File Manager" as the default application to use
when I double-click an archive. (not sure why there are several programs,
the others don't seem to work for default double-click or "Open").
I have "View / Flat View" ticked so the entire archive can be seen complete
with directory path hierarchy, the same as I am accustomed to using in WinZip.
No matter what I do to extract the archive, 7-Zip seems to flatten,
ie ignore the directory "path prefix" for each file - just as if in
WinZip I had cleared the (rarely but occasionally useful) "Use Folder
Names" checkbox.
Using the second button along "Extract" the archive is extracted
but completely flattened.
Then I thought "Ah maybe the blue horizontal line means "Flat Extract"
(but what a peculiar choice for one of the main toolbar options…)
Perhaps I should be using the ".-> Copy" button - no difference, 7-Zip
still flattens the hierarchy.
I can't understand this extract behaviour. Why would anybody want this?
7-Zip is such a popular project, this must be my "user error" surely?
Or is this the underlying reason why there are so many 7-Zip GUI replacements?
The program can surely handle this correctly, using the cascading context
menu I can right-click my archive and "Extract files…" or "Extract here"
and it works as expected. Am I the only person in the world who opens
an archive by double-clicking these days?
Any clarification on this issue would be much appreciated!

The "View / Flat View" option that I'm selecting, because I like to be able to see my entire archive,
has a knock-on side effect of forcing a "flat extract".
If I may be so bold, that's rather unintuitive behaviour,
the "View" menu should be just that, a view, not a control.
is there a way to get a WinZip-style view of the entire archive but without changing the
extract behaviour?
(I don't like having to click up and down paths to find a particular file, often I need to
review MANIFEST.MF in different .jar files inside an .ear file and doing it that way is
tedious in the extreme)
Thanks
Ed

Have you thought about having 2 extract options instead of 1: "Extract Flat" and "Extract Tree" , regardless of the view.
If both types of extract buttons were on the main menu bar this would be amazing.

Thank you Jacques for your support,
the silence on this issue has been deafening, I was beginning to think I am crazy!

Hugely annoying 'feature'. Please offer the options that jaques420 mentions.

I found a simple fix: use \"bandizip\" instead - it\'s free and there are both 32- and 64-bit windows versions.
I\'ve been using it for a couple of months now and very happy.

Just updated to 9.13b - no change in behaviour.
Ah, I figured out the problem.
