    7-Zip 19.00 was released.

    7-Zip for 64-bit Windows x64:

    https://7-zip.org/a/7z1900-x64.exe
    or
    https://7-zip.org/a/7z1900-x64.msi

    7-Zip for 32-bit Windows:

    https://7-zip.org/a/7z1900.exe
    or
    https://7-zip.org/a/7z1900.msi

    What's new after 7-Zip 18.06:

    • Encryption strength for 7z archives was increased:
the size of random initialization vector was increased from 64-bit to 128-bit,
and the pseudo-random number generator was improved.
    • Some bugs were fixed.

New Bug in version 19.00 - Open Archive in Explorer

In previous versionf of 7-zip, up to 18.05 (never tried 18.06), you could right-click on a file and choose 7-Zip --> Open Archive, and 7-zip would do its best attempt at opening the file. This is a great feature which I use all the time to open EXE installation files which 90% of the time are just packed zip with an EXE wrapper around them, particularly drivers installers - this enables me to extract only the drivers folder and not all the other miscellaneous stuff I do not need.

With version 19.00, it does not work - nothing happens (unless the file has an extension registered to be open with 7-Zip anyway). You have to manually open 7-zip and then home in on the EXE that you want to open - very very time consuming

I had to revert to 18.05 to get that to work again.

Please install 19.00 again and check it again.
        Example:
I select 7z1900.exe file, press 7-Zip \ Open and 7-Zip opens 7z1900.exe as 7z archive. So it works as expected.

So try that 7z1900.exe case and another case that doesn't work for you.

          Hi Igor,

Thank You for replying so quickly this morning.

OK - I have narrowed down the problem. It does not happen on Win7 64-bit, nor Win8.1 64-bit, the main OS'es that I use - everything works OK on those platforms.

But the problem happens on Win10 Pro 64-bit and Win10 Home 64-bit. Also, before I posted this morning I had tried uninstalling and re-installing, and I had tried unchecking the shell options in settings inside 7-zip, applying the changes, and then re-setting them ON and again applying the changes, but that did not help. Basically I can replicate the problem at will on any Win10 64-bit (we use Classic Shell on Win10, by the way, just to ensure you have everything, and we are on Build 1809 - http://www.classicshell.net/).

Try to open exe file from explorer, instead of classicshell.

              Hi Igor,

I think you misunderstood - I am trying to open from Explorer.

We have Classic Shell installed on Win7/8/8.1/10. All that does is change the way the Taskbar, Start Menu, and some cosmetic things in Windows Explorer. I was only giving you that information as background information.

So, again, no problem on Win7/Win8.1, but cannot get it to work on Win10, in Explorer

                So you can't open 7z1900.exe ?

There is some probability that you have several 7-Zip versions on same computer and maybe you call some old version of 7-zip via context menu.

                1) scan your folders for another versions of 7-zip and remove them.
                2) Reboot
                3) Install 7-Zip 19.00
                4) Try to open some zip file with command 7-Zip \ Open
Call menu Help / About to check version of 7-zip.
                5) Try to open 7z1900.exe file with command 7-Zip \ Open

                  Hi Igor,

Here is a recap of the problem.

On Win10 right-clicking on a file in Explorer and choosing 7-Zip \ Open Archive works for all files whose extension has been associated with 7-zip, and the program that opens is v19 - there are no rogue old versions as this was a brand new Win10 Home installation.

Right-clicking on a file that is not associated with 7-zip, such as a .IMG download from Microsoft, a .ISO, or a .EXE, nothing happens. In other words it works like a right-clik \ Open (ie. it depends on the file association).

All of the above works on Win7 and Win8.1. (ie. it does NOT depend on the file association).

                    1) Maybe you have some another incorrect program in context menu. Try to uninstall or disable all third-party programs (including Classic Shell) from context menu and try 7-zip calling again.

Also there are another 7-Zip commands in context menu. Try to call each of them for some files. Do they work as expected?

                    2) There is also "File \ Open Archive" command in 7-Zip File Manager. Does it work?

                      Hi Igor,

"File \ Open Archive" in 7-Zip File Manager works - that is what i use when the right-click isn't working.

What I am interested in knowing is this : I know how in the registry 7-Zip is registered to be a ShellEx Context Menu handler.

What I would like to know is how, for each particular file, the context menu for 7-Zip is different. What is the mechanism through which Explorer works out what to display as context menu, and sub-menu. This would then explain why Explorer displays different context menus for a .TXT and for a .IMG, and why "Open Archive" is displayed for a .IMG and not for a .TXT. This, I think, is the key here so that we can work out what is happening, but I am missing the additional knowledge of how it all hangs together.

7-zip doesn't show some menu items for txt file.
                        It's not the problem.

The problem can be in another place. All shell extensions work in one context. So if one shell extension works incorrectly, you can get some strange effects in another shell extnsions.
So try to disable another context menu shell extnesions one-by-one and check 7-Zip after each step. That way you can try to find "bad" third-party shell extension.

For example, I call Open Archive for 7z1900.exe in my Windows 10 Explorer without any problem. So probably it's problem related to your unique set of settings and programs in your shell context menu.

The problem may be with "Classic Shell" itself. Development stopped Dec 2017 citing issues with Windows 10 causing it to break and the frequency of Windows 10 updates. Informaion is from the http://www.classicshell.net/ home page.

OK. I have been busy, hence no posting, but I have now narrowed down the problem.

Using a brand new Win10 Home laptop, installing 18.05. No problem. Installing 18.06, problem ! Version 19 - same problem. And that is before even installing Classic Shell.

All of the below are in Windows Explorer :

Right-click \ 7-Zip \ Open Archive on a Microsoft ISO, does not open the file in 18.06 or 19.0 (yet that is what I always used to use until 18.05)

Right-clik \ Open with and then choosing 7-Zip, opens the file in every version, including 18.06 and 19.0 !!

Right-click \ 7-Zip \ Extract files ..... opens the Extract dialogue in every version including 18.06 and 19.0.

So - the problem is not a Classic Shell problem, and it definitely manifests itself on many Win10 laptops.

Didn't have time to do all this testing before, but I have now done it and I hope it helps you find the issue.

Try installing the 32-bit version for testing purposes, it should run
on a 64-bit Windows, and let us know the results.

OK - will do. This new laptop has now gone to its end-user, with Classic Shell now installed, etc.., etc...

Next one we set up I will definitely re-run all the tests with 7-Zip 32-bit.

You must test it for another extensions too.
                            for example, 7z or tar.
Did you install any another program before "7-Zip"?

                              Hi Igor,

Personally I do not think I need to test for any of the extensions that you mention because for those I simply double-click on the file, and that works in all versions.

I have used Right-click \ 7-Zip \ Open Archive on ISOs since version 9 of 7-Zip and it has always worked, that's a lot of years, and that is why it is a problem. We are an IT company and we use a lot of Microsoft's ISOs and that is how we have always opened them so we can extract the content and run the Install file.

And one more thing I have not mentioned : once we install either 18.06 or 19.0, uninstalling those and reverting back to 18.05 does not solve the problem because both 18.06 and 19.0 mess things up permanently.

Like Bill Ant, I use Win7Pro64 on my work PC (I am the only one who still uses Win7) and I have not installed 18.06 or 19.0 on it because I simply do not want to deal with that hassle, so I cannot confirm whether it screws up on Win7 as well. But I have a Win8.1Pro64 at home and I will test it on that.

                              EDIT
Hi Igor again - I decided to call the user of the laptop we set up yesterday and asked if I could connect to test something, and I did the test you mentioned and the behaviour is the same for .7Z or .ZIP files. Right-click \ 7-Zip \ Open Archive does NOT open them either.

So there is no any error message or somethings else?
Is it stock Windows without any changes?
Maybe notebook uses some third-party preinstalled software also, and that software creates additional items in context menu?

                                  Hi Igor,

Yes, No errors. Right-click \ 7-Zip \ Open Archive ... nothing happens. Stock Windows, UK locale & keyboard.

I plucked up some courage and installed v19 on my home Win 8.1 Pro and it works fine. I then told those of my work colleagues who are on Win 8.1 Pro, they updated to v19, and everything works on 8.1 Pro.

Knowing that there were no problem on Win 8.1, I then updated my Win 7 Pro at work and no problem.

The problem is definitely confined to Windows 10 64-bit. And it happens on all flavours of Windows, Win 7 PC upgraded to Win10, Win10 Home, Win10 Pro. All using UK locales+keyboards, etc... And it happens even after having just installed Windows and nothing else yet ! Pretty frustrating.

Then show screenshot of menu that doesn't work.
Check that there is no any third party software in menu.

                                      Hi Igor,

The highlighted entry on the screenshot is what does not work. When we choose that option, the mouse cursor changes temporarily as if something is about to happen but nothing happens, no errors, and the mouse cursor goes back to normal.

With regards to your question about third party software :

                                      a) This problem happens on a brand new install of Windows 10 before anything else other than 7-Zip has been installed, so that makes your question irrelevant here.

                                      b) Most importantly : 18.05 does not have a problem. From the moment we install either 18.06 or 19.0, the problem occurs. Once there is a problem, uninstalling 18.06/19.0 and re-installing 18.05 does not cure the problem - things are messed up permanently.

Make sure to use the 64bit installer or archive without the installer. Maybe re-download it just to be on the safe side.
                                        Also try under:
Tools > Options > System > Click on both collumns of "Associate 7Zip"
                                        Next under:
Tools > Options 7Zip > Uncheck "Cascaded context menu" for an easier more direct access to the various functions from the context menu.

Hi Bill - already tried all of that even though none of it is really relevant to the issue.

We've been using 7-Zip since version 9, moved to 64-bit as soon as it was available, and no problems until 18.05. It all started with 18.06.

I suspect the problem is with non-US/Russion versions of Windows because we get it immediately after the install of Windows, before we install our own stuff, so it is definitely 7-Zip because if we install 18.05 immediately after installing Win10, no problem at all.

Something changed in 18.06 which has indirectly resulted in this. Us trying anything suggested in the posts is really not relevant : we are talking about the problem happening before any software has been installed. We keep an archive of the last two years of all software we install, so we have version 16 all the way to 19, and only 18.06 and 19.0 have this problem, immediately after having installed Win10. Everything points to a bug introduced in 18.06 carried through to 19.00. We noticed it immediately at 18.06 because we use that feature all the time to open ISOs or inspect EXE files, or extract zipped EXEs without running the EXE, but we thought someone else would report it and so didn't bother to register on Sourceforge to report it. It is only when it wasn't fixed in 19.00 that I decided to register on Sourceforge to report the bug.

I understand that it's only happening in version =>18.06. It's possible some anomaly due to the localization in conjunction with your Windows language (if I had to guess it would be French perhaps?). It's most likely has to do with the way the newer 7Zip versions hooks into the context menu, since that's not working. If maybe Igor could look into the any changes in the contect menu hooks which may have changed since version =>18.06 that's the only thing I can think of. As a test try reinstalling Windows but this time choose US Eng for testing purposes and see if it works. Also maybe the Spybot or some other antivirus (Windows Defender) is maybe being too aggressive and it's blocking any new hooks to be executed from the context menu?!

You have probably already tried, but just for sake of completeness try going to Tools > Options > 7Zip > Check both "Integrate x32 and Integrate x64" to the context menu, close the app completely and repeat it 2 more times where you turn it off and on again with completle exit between switch. It's Important to check, exit, uncheck, exit, check, exit then finally try the one of the context menu commands.
