With 7zip, I compressed a folder with many MBs of files and used the check box to delete after compression...The files were on a USB flash drive. The compressed file that was put on the C: drive turned out fine...but the flash drive is no longer recognized by Windows 8.1 --and apparently can't be fixed.

I too would like to see this.
One major reason why people in my organization do not adopt 7zip is because it lacks this functionality.
GZIP has it natively
ZIP has it as "-m"

There is some delay when windows actually writes data to external drive.
So it's not safe to remove drive just after operation finish.
