Installing the GUI 7zip from http://www.7-zip.org/ causes Windows built in zipping utility to stop working.

Normally one can right click a file or folder and send to zip file. After installing 7zip, doing so results in a popup dialog stating "Cannot create output file" and a file with random letters and numbers (presumably used during normal functioning, then removed).

This is most distressing!

Upping the priority. Uninstalling the application and doing the required reboot does not restore functionality.

Now I have *no* compression utility.

    Dear mcbainus,

I think your XP OS was unstable to begin with. I have XP, Vista, 2000 Pro. On none of these OS's did 7-Zip installs cause the problem you have. I checked and I can right click a file or folder and send to zip file through OS zip util.

I think it's time for you to re-install. Have you noticed any other problems? I'd guess yes. Hey, it's Windows. Sorry 'bout that. Don't mean to sound flippant, but after a few years of Windows tearing itself apart and zillions of patches that are no better than betaware we all have to re-install.

    7-Zip isn't the problem.

I'm sorry you feel that way, but I've only had this machine for less than three months and the utility worked before I installed 7-zip. I hardly call that needing a complete OS reinstall. I suppose I should take some good feeling that someone even saw this "bug", but I don't like the idea of having to install a tool I use only on rare occasion just to do the things I could normally do without even giving it a second thought.

I will say that letting the Windows OS disk do its "repair" job (which reinstalls tons of files you don't need and never the one causing the problem) restored some functionality.

With those things in mind, Windows doesn't just up and break. Especially considering 7-zip was told explicitly during install not to set itself as the default for zip files, and 7-zip isn't a new app to the block either.

    Well, thanks anyways ...
