7zip is able to view and extract most, but not all esd files. Here's an example of such esd file:

To download, copy the URL under "MetadataESD_professional_en-us.esd" and paste it on a new tab or a download manager, then rename to "MetadataESD_professional_en-us.esd".

Although some files can be extracted, trying to extract all the files from this archive with 7zip results in many errors as following:

It's big - 650 MB. It's part of a Windows update package, created by Microsoft, I don't know how.
It's not the only such file, there are many files in Windows update packages called something like "professional_en-us.esd", "core_en-us.esd", etc. which have the same issue.

Where from do you get these files?
What package, what program, what system?
What folder they are stored?

From Microsoft servers. https://uupdump.net/ is a service which allows to easily find these files, but these are archives which are used for Windows updates (Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)).

Is it possible that esd file contains only changed files?
if so, some files in esd refer to some another wim or refer to previous installed files?
for example,

that file has sha-1 value. But probably there is no data stream for that file in esd file.

Maybe, I truly don't know. If that's the case, it will be helpful to have a more descriptive message, and perhaps a way to specify that previous wim/files. But if that's too much work, I'm not sure that's worth it.

I don't know. From some online search, seems like it's called "metadata ESD", and this page mentions a tool called wimlib-imagex:
