#61 get rid of binary files

binary data files are lame. fwiw, even M$ realized this.
particularly, project and config files need to be plain text.
for desktop files it doesn't matter much.
fixing this is a prerequisite for making many other
improvements [simple] or not needing to do them at all
(no need for an advanced gui if i just can edit the file in
an editor).
