Hi Friends, i have been using servestream for about a month now to stream from my home computer to my casio commando android phone. No issues. I got a new phone today (htc rezound android) and downloaded servestream but am having issues. at first when i entered my url it kept telling me the player could not support this type of file (M3u). now it just says "opening url" and never completes?? i have restarted both phone and computer. I can stream from my laptop and other phone still. Its def something going on with servestream in this new phone.

can anyone out there offer some trouble shooting? I have already deleted and re-entered the url. i am 100% it is correct.

    url: http://insidethesound.drunkensailor.org:8000/stream.m3u

    website: http://insidethesound.com/

    thank you! joe.

Hello Joe. I just tried this on my phone and the URL played without an issue. I've been getting emails with people having issues similar to yours lately. I don't think it necessarily an issue with ServeStream but with the underlying MediaPlayer API included with specific versions of Android. The MediaPlayer class in newer versions of Android buffers for a longer amount of time. The fact that you can still play the stream on your old device (which I assume is running the same version) also supports my theory. Can you tell me what version(s) of Android your two devices are running? In the meantime, please ensure that both "metadata options" and the "progressive download" option are turned off and see if that makes a difference. Also, as a test, you can try streaming the URL over WIFI which would reduce buffering times and ensure the phone can actually play the stream.

Hiya Will, thanks for the rapid reply and more-so, for an amazing free app. It because of servestream, i can now settle in with my own music.. you are a true saint.

as far as your questions / recommendations - i need help!

    1) i have no idea how to tell what what android version im using? But i will look into that in the next 12 hours and reply with that info.

    2) can you provide a link to basic instructions on how to stream my url from wifi? if you mean wifi on my phone, thats what i do use (and what i always did with previous phone).

Im not that technological advanced as i should be i suppose..

    thanks again,

    J$

No problem Joe, I'm glad the application is useful. Regarding your questions:

1.) You should be able to go to "Settings->About phone" the version is listed under "Android version". For example, my phone is on version 4.1.1.

2.) I mean connect to the WIFI at your house, coffee shop, etc and attempt to stream the station. Keep in mind that WIFI and your phones internet 3g/4g mobile network aren't the same thing.

okay thank you will and also timar for testing on your end as well.

my new htc is 4.0.3 - the phone i have been using without issue (casio commando) is 2.3.3

as for the wifi, i only use mine or other available wifi on my phone when streaming due to my low data package and fears of going over. I am using my home wifi to try to stream in this case. i am able to do other things lke check email and browse websites in my wifi on this new phone without issue.

progressive scan was turned off already and i just turned off metadata options and it is now back to telling me "sorry, the player does not support this type of media file" again.

    Hi,

I tested the stream on WiFi and 3g on android 4.1.2 and both works great.

    UPDATE:
restarted the phone and tried again and it now strangely works! i restarted several times yesterday without success. i was thinking maybe i t was metadata issue being thats the only thing changed since restart so i turned it back on, and servestream still works, now with metadata!

i hate that we could not identify what the issue was in the case someone else has a similar one, but at any rate, i do appreciate all your help and again, creating the best app ever!!

    Be well, joe.

i got my stream working, but another stream i listen to is also still not working. I tried this one as well yesterday when experiencing issues with my own stream to determine if it was my stream, or my phne/ app.

this is another stream i use a lot. the phone says "opening url..." for several minuets and then says "the url could not be opened"..

    any suggestions??

My phone, a Galaxy GT-P1000 running Android 2.2.1, is known not play everything ;) but the 2 links you provided do play, both via WiFi and 3G/mobile.

However, the second one (http://old.wncw.org/media/Misc/128K.m3u) is causing troubles. The 128K.m3u contains the 3 lines

    #extm3u
    #extinf:99999,88.7 WNCW
    http://audio-mp3.ibiblio.org:8000/wncw-128k

ServeStream (0.5.2) chokes on the first 2 lines, saying it cannot play this type of audio, but it moves on and eventually plays the actual stream. Not always, though, it might take some tries.

    HTH.

Good catch, Andreas. This was a bug in the M3U playlist parser. I just fixed it and verified that http://old.wncw.org/media/Misc/128K.m3u plays. This fix will be avilable in the next release (v0.5.3). Thanks for the help.

    William,

I just made a HUGE mistake by upgrading to Jelly Bean yesterday and now unable to connect to any streams using your program. Prior to yesterday I didn't have any problems! http://205.164.62.20:8070 is one of the many streams I listen to. I get this error: "Sorry, this player does not support this media file"

Any work around? I read something above it has to do with the internal player buffer. I used streamfurious prior to yours,of course that's now out of date. Thank you for great free program!

Michael, I've had similar complaints from other users who upgraded to JellyBean. At this point I can offer two workarounds. 1.) Use the progressive download option 2.) Use the new (beta) version from http://servestream.sourceforge.net/ServeStream.apk and check the "Use FFmpeg-based player" setting for URL's that won't play using the stock MediaPlayer. I haven't released this version to the market yet but I will be doing so soon since the Android MediaPlayer class in JellyBean seems unreliable. I tried both options with the URL you provided and they worked for me. Please let me know if this solves your problem. I'm glad you like the application, please take time to rate it in the market (or here) if you get a chance, thanks again.
