Hello, saw this on Tomshardware: https://www.tomshardware.com/amp/how-to/detect-com-port-windows-serial-port-notifier
However I installed it on 2 windows 10 PCs and it doesn't work on either. There is no change to the listed comports when a usb device is plugged or unplugged and no notification boxes appear.
Can you help please? I program microcontrollers so this would be useful.
Hello, sorry to hear you're having problems.
Hello,
I am also having problems on Windows 10. The COM ports are listed correctly but no notifications when I plug in a serial cable connected to a device.
All other notifications appear from different apps and notifications are enabled.
Kind regards,
Ethan
Hi Ethan,
If you right click on the program icon the notification tray and go into Settings, can you confirm that "Show Notification on Port Changes" is checked?
If it is, can you check the user.config file (located in
C:\Users\{User Name}\AppData\Local\Helm_PCB\Serial_Port_Monitor.exe_{some random string}\{program version}\user.config
) and check the value of the "ShowNotification" setting? It should be set to True.Hello Amr,
Yes I can confirm that "Show Notification on Port Changes" is checked and the value stated in the config file is listed as 'True'
Kind regads,
Ethan

I am having the exact same issue and have verified all the steps that Amr did above.
How was his problem solved?
Can you confirm whether or not the program correctly displays the list of COM ports when you right click on the program icon in the notification area?
Yes, the notification is in the notification area. But not in the notifications popup.
Is there a reason that you have ghosted me?
Mine is working correctly now, has been for a while. Thanks.
Hi guys,
I'm also having the same issue - Windows 11.
</ArrayOfLauncher>
<setting name="ShowNotification" serializeas="String">
<value>True</value>
It's a real shame - it worked great on my Win10 machine.
Did it ever get resolved for the others on this thread?</setting>
Hello everyone,
Sorry for the delay in resolving this ticket. I downloaded a Windows 11 virtual machine and installed Serial Port Notifier and was able to replicate the notification issue.
Turns out the problem is due to the "Focus Assist" feature in Windows 10 and 11. In the virtual machine I tested it on, Focus Assist was set to "Priority Only" - this results in the Serial Port Notifier notifications being hidden and accessible only if you click on Notifications area in the bottom right corner.
If you set Focus Assist to Off, then all notifications are shown, including those generated by Serial Port Notifier.
I'll be closing this ticket now. Feel free to re-open it if setting Focus Assist to Off does not resolve the issue.

Hi Amr,
Thanks for the advice - slightly different with mine - Go to Focus Assist and below that is a list of apps permitted to notify. Add Port Notifier to the list and turn it on - sorted! :)
Cheers;
Pete
Thanks Peter Norman- Your tip fixed the problem for me.
