Right-click once in empty space and then press delete. It works for
me. It is still a bug, yes.

As many keyboard shortcuts as possible would be great, I agree. A good
way to do it might be a config file or at least for menu items, allow
them to follow the GNOME menu config, so you can change them
on-the-fly.

I am using 0.8.6 on Ubuntu, and I go into the song editor, left-click
to set the left side of the selection I want to play (staring point)
and then the right side with right-click. Then click the looping
button so it is depressed/enabled. Now when I hit play, the song
starts playing at the left marker, wherever I put it. Works for me.
