#251 First patch for cppunit and unit testing

Small patch to integrate the unit tests into the main build
procedure.

New make target: check

This is just a simple (and silly) test to prove that we can build
unit tests, check for cppunit-1.10.2, and run a simple unit test.

More unit tests to follow.

This is a patch against 5.0.0.16.
